At 423 metres above Shanghai, the 94th-floor observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial Center is built around an eight-metre glass curtain wall — the view it frames is the reason visitors come. In July 2019, Nanhai Display supplied its Clear Projection Film and integrated light-projection solution that turned that same wall into the screen for OCEAN BY NAKED, the Shanghai debut of the Japanese art collective NAKED.
Our goal is to work closely with partners to help customers achieve greater success in multiple fields.
The 94th floor sells a view. Its eight-metre floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall is the attraction, and any treatment applied to that surface had to preserve the panoramic sightlines across the city rather than cover them.
Conventional projection offered no way in. A rear-projection screen or an opaque display panel would have turned the observation deck's main asset into a black box, while projecting directly onto untreated glass produces a faint image that washes out under the deck's own lighting. The brief was to make the glass carry high-brightness imagery after dark and return to being ordinary architectural glass in daylight.
Nanhai Display supplied its Clear Projection Film for the eight-metre curtain wall, together with an integrated light-projection solution. The film combines high transparency with high reflective brightness, so the projected imagery holds its clarity even at oblique viewing angles, while the glass keeps its open, panoramic sightlines. After dark the wall carried virtual 3D imagery of jellyfish, drifting fish and coral reefs; by day it remained a window onto Shanghai.
The film was applied to the glass already in place as part of the integrated projection solution delivered with the venue team — no replacement glazing and no structural work to the curtain wall.
The eight-metre curtain wall carried the deep-sea imagery of OCEAN BY NAKED after dark and stayed a window onto the Shanghai skyline by day. The installation ran through 16 February 2020.
The project was formally approved by the operations team at Shanghai World Financial Center.
Both parties have indicated they will continue exploring applications for transparent projection film across urban landmarks, commercial exhibitions and public spaces.
